The OSMC Difference: 50 Years Strong & New Surgery Center/Partnership

Speeches were made and the ribbon was cut last week to mark the completion of a new ambulatory surgery center—The Surgery Center of Granger. A regional destination for orthopedic surgery and care, the facility reflects the vision and expertise of Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center and Beacon Health System, demonstrating their commitment to providing the highest quality orthopedic care to patients at a convenient centralized location. Patients can find The Center on 4.65 acres on the north side of Beacon Parkway near the Indiana Toll Road entrance and Capital Avenue.

The 23,150-square-foot, $15.1 million facility contains four operating rooms, one procedure room and 20 pre- and post-operative recovery bays, with the ability to add two more operating rooms, a procedure room and up to 10 patient bays in the future.

The layout and design of the facility went through several iterations as physicians and staff offered input to optimize flow and efficiency and offer patients the very best experience. Ground was broken on the building in October 2021 with Panzica Building Corporation serving as project manager. The center incorporates natural light to encourage healing and create a comfortable, welcoming and patient-centered experience. It also features a covered entrance for patient drop-offs and a separate covered post-procedure pickup area.

“Orthopedic surgeries are increasingly shifting away from hospital inpatient settings to outpatient ambulatory surgery centers, where highly skilled orthopedic specialists and support teams diagnose and treat injuries, conditions and disorders using the most advanced instrumentation and technology,” said Dr. John A. Huchko, medical director, The Surgery Center of Granger. “Our facility will advance high-quality and high-value care by enhancing access and affordability while improving the health of our communities.”

“The combined strengths of the Beacon Bone & Joint and OSMC teams will mean comprehensive care for patients, whether they have an acute injury or have been living with chronic pain,” said Dan Gartee, chief executive officer, OSMC. “Our board-certified and fellowship-trained specialists can help with everything from interventional pain management to orthopedic procedures, including total joint replacements, for bone, joint and spine injuries and conditions.”

The estimated open date for the center is July 1.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

For OSMC, who is celebrating their 50th anniversary, The Surgery Center of Granger is their second ambulatory surgery center, with their other location in Elkhart.

OSMC continues to provide comprehensive orthopedic care and service to Michiana since 1973. With 21 physicians and four advanced practice providers, their skilled, board-certified physicians and professionals offer surgical and non-surgical orthopedic treatment, physical therapy, pain management, podiatry, medical care for sports or on-the-job injuries and more in their locations in Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee and Granger.

“Our care is very patient-focused,” said Gartee. “We listen to the patient—present them with all the options and then let them decide on their care plan. With the addition of The Surgery Center of Granger, we are now able to bring our style of care to St. Joseph County.”
